What We Do

Interact with County Government:

The County League interacts with and lobbies the Suffolk County Legislature to address issues affecting the county at large.  Contact with the full Legislative body as well as individual visits to legislators begin in January; attending legislative committee meetings as well as general sessions continue throughout the session.

Inform voters and monitor the election process:

The Suffolk County League maintains a continuing working relationship with the County Board of Elections. It also conducts candidate's debates, publishes voting guides and ballot proposition guides. A speakers bureau is available to organizations requesting information on election issues of importance.  The League never supports or opposes a candidate or political party. We are known to the public and to government officials as the organization that offers a non-partisan approach to politics and issues.

Publish information on County Government:

The Suffolk County League publishes and distributes an annual Directory of Public Officials. Together with the County Executive¹s Office, we also write and produce a comprehensive book entitled "This is Suffolk County."   Click on the links above to view these publications.

Programs and Events:

Throughout the year, the Suffolk County League coordinates special projects.  This year, many local Leagues participated in one such Study Circle program: Balancing Justice, an examination of the criminal justice system.

Our Roots

The League was founded in 1920 in Chicago, Illinois by Carrie Chapman Catt and other women active in the Suffragette movement, following the passage of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which guaranteed women the right to vote.
