Minutes of the September 30, 2007 Board Meeting


Stephanie Zinger, V.P., presiding, A. Brunswick volunteered to take minutes in Sec’y L. Reich’s absence. S. Zinger called the mtg to order @ 3:15 P.M. with a standing moment of silence in honor of & respect to our recently deceased President, Betsy Jacobson

In attendance(randomly ordered):T. Limarzi, P. Gates, A. Brunswick, J. Travis-Messer, S. Zinger, M. Pysher, M. Shaw, S. Krolich, M. Dwyer, G. Veilbig, C. Wilberg, E. Gove, C. Kenny, G. Ketcham

-V.P.Zinger abjured assumption of Presidency. M. Pysher, Nominating Comm. Chair, proposed that she would contact new members J. Ribotti & Z. Munson for either one to assume Presidency. In absence of new Board Pres., responsibilities of that position have been assumed by various Directors.

-Education Comm. Chair, J.T-Messer volunteered to assume Treasurer functions, appropriate motion to do so was made & approved, & she distributed tentative to-date financial statement pending her receipt of Betsy’s final records.

-Board approved purchase of Memorial Tree to honor Betsy Jacobson. To be placed on Ctr. Fire House Grounds.

–Approved two weeks’ running of ½ page ad in REPORTER for SILWV/SIA Oct.13 & 20 candidates’ fora, both to be moderated by REPORTER editor, Cara Loriz. Questions were drafted by trio of B. Jacobson, A. Barnett, C. Kenny. Qns. will not be given candidates beforehand; no opening statements ;20-30 minutes will be scheduled for questions from audience.

–Additional Voter Services activities re: Fora include:
- Table outside auditorium with League materials(membership forms, absentee ballot requests, Know Your Town, etc.)
- Brief Audience Reaction survey forms to be distributed
- Debates will be taped for Ch.22 showing.

–Elderly voting assistance: Comm. of: G. Ketcham, T Limarzi, S. Zinger, A. Brunswick to contact H. Roberts and/or M. Brennan re: giving Absentee Ballot request forms to handicapped elderly to facilitate their voting.

–Observer Corps: P. Gates, M. Cole, S. Gerstner, D. Strongin (sp?) Presently share responsibility for coverage of weekly Town Board work sessions. More volunteers are needed. Notes are distributed to email list of approx. 200 requesters.

–G. Ketcham proposed that S.I.L.W.V. sponsor a scholarship for a graduating senior w. political ambitions. G. Veilberg cited her family’s experience with irregularity in having appropriate candidates for their Found. Scholarship. No formal decision made.( Ed. note: this item might be placed on both Youth & Education Comm’s agendas for consideration.)

–Peter Munson was suggested as replacement for B. Jacobson’s role in analyzing town budget.
J. Travis-Messer offered to speak to him re: doing this.


–T. Limarzi volunteered taking over responsibility for S.I.L.W.V. Reporter. (Ed. note: Is this currently in L. Reich’s hands?)

–M. Pysher gave detailed & enthusiastic report on Town’s planning for our Communities That Care(CTC) program, a broad-based community participatory alcohol & drug use prevention program. Key Leader training mtg. to be held on Oct. 18 in Ctr. Fire House, 9:30-11:30 A.M.
Z. Munson, M. Pysher, A. Krauss, J. Read, & S. Binder comprise the Core group leading CTC program on Island. First step is developing Island Risk Profile. CTC is a knowledge-research-based packaged program made available at the federal level through SAMHSA (Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration), fully funded & administered by the State’s OASAS (Office of Alcohol & Substance Abuse Services) staff.

J.T. Messer reported that Tick Committee’s 4-poster Program awaits Cornell’s receiving approval of ‘tickacide’(sp?), i.e., Premethrin, use, North Haven’s approval as the control site for evaluating 4-poster effects& training for tick count. March is expected start date for program.

T. Limarzi volunteered to edit & distribute earlier mentioned Town Council “observer notes”.

M. Pysher suggested attaching Community Calendar to Observer Notes.

J.T. Messer has been invited to moderate Southold candidate debate & will contribute her fee to SILWV coffers.

Next mtg. Scheduled for 3-5PM on Nov.11 (Nov.18 if Ctr. Fire House is not available on that date).

Mtg. Adjourned @ 6PM.
